What lies in store for PPS?

Frankly, i don't know besides the fact that it will continue doing what its been doing all this while: bringing pings together, giving ppl an easy place to read Malaysian blog-happenings. That was my vision from the very beginning: a website where, at a glance, i could read what my fellow Malaysian bloggers were writing. I think PPS has not failed me, or any of its users in that regard.

It may not be fancy, or flashy or all Web 2.0 or Web 3.0. It was never meant to be all that, i suppose. It is what it is, and i'm proud of it.

A friend emailed me the other day heaping the greatest praise on PPS its ever received.

Simply put he said, "PPS works."

That, i think, sums up 5 years of service.

5 years is a long time in the blogging world and its an achievement of sort. PPS set out to become what it was meant to be, a Malaysian blog tal that seeks to allow bloggers to publicise and showcase their content to other like-minded bloggers. I remember well when I first started blogging and got to know of PPS, it helped me built up my traffic and at the same time allowed me a window into what others were saying around the country. It was a privilege to also find kindred souls and good friends in the blogosphere and it was thanks to PPS. PPS hosts all kinds and it had its lows and ups but since its still here and kicking, it is only fitting that everyone who has ever taken part in it to give thanks for its existence as well as to those who went about making it happen.

When I was first come to PPS (Previous white layout) I thought it was some news web LOL! But then, after the changes and I joined PPS as well, until now most my traffic was by PPS itself. Nonetheless, PPS is the first thing I check everyday after my email checking, because it's simply the fastest Malaysia news than any other media! It took me quite a while till i surf the site myself only to find out that the site is a blog aggregator. Back then, i didn't really use PPS service as i think that the things i blog (eg:today i woke up, i eat, i sleep...) was quite boring and i figured out that people wont want to read it. Instead, i'm one of the stalkers that stalked various bloggers who pinged their blog-posts there. I was really an invisible reader then. Going from blog to blog without leaving any footprint in each blogs.

I have been blogging for about 6 years and petalingstreet have been a great companion in showcasing my writings and works to all Malaysians. Its like advertising for your new shop. But in this case its free. Its like go to a busy street, like petaling street at the heart of KL and scream your writings or creations, and before you know it, people start to notice you, people start to come to your shop, and the best part is, people start to leave comment, leave behind their foot prints, making a mark on you. For this, it helps me to shape myself, imagine, I have the whole malaysia as my audience, and I have different kind of people giving comments. I started reading blogs way before I even thought of registering my own. Back then, the default source for stuff to read was all in PPS, and the sidebar of links to recent posts by people like sixthseal.com was still around. Some things in PPS have changed - that sidebar is gone, I've started pinging it, the flurry of spam came and left, the increasingly political tone of the pings. PPS was one of the first places where I realised that the online community was getting very political, just glancing through the blogpost titles. Now, it's still the place to go in search of blogs to read, and to feel out what's going on in Malaysia.

Project Petaling Street, or PPS as it’s faithfully known, a Malaysian blog-tal as it calls itself, is a blog aggregating site where many Malaysian bloggers are familiar. Most Malaysian bloggers gather their first pot of traffic from this site. It is celebrating its 5th anniversary this 12 June and in their words, “It must have done something right!” I agree that it could have done something right, but believe it could have done more! This is especially with the huge fan base that it has!

It was (and still is) THE place for bloggers to ping their latest post, and come to find the latest in the burgeoning blogosphere. People tend to say that PPS is a outdated aggregator, but I think it is a awesome aggregator which stands the test of time. It may have been around longer than the rest but I think it is still the best aggregator. People who comes here are just here to read and get their post pinged and not for some popularity contest which most of the other aggregator is for, which only result in flaming and fights. This is why I love PPS and it will be here for another 5 years and more. Thank you PPS and happy birthday.

PPS is programmed to ignore identical URLs i.e. the 2nd time the same URL is posted, it will be blocked.

Therefore, if you want your ping to get through, pls use the article PERMALINK.

Thanks to Noor Hidayat for highlighting the latest problem. He is a long time support of PPS, and i would welcome any efforts such as his to keep this place clean and civil.

ps. As a general rule, i allow some multi-pings to slide, simply because i know the pings disappear very quickly, and it may not be the intention of the blogger to spam. But if i notice repeated behaviour of this sort, then a ban will be coming your way.

pps. Don't abuse the leniency i've showed towards content -- PPS has a non-censorship policy, but things like porn (artistic nudity is fine), incitement of violence, and overtly racist tones are BIG NO-NOs. Please exercise discretion.

Why i feel this way is perhaps best left to another entry, but what i would like all of you to understand is that there is a huge difference between a leader and a hero. Many of you will be leaders one day, how many of you will be heroes? And while some of you may take the humble road and say, "But i don't want to be a hero", you fail to realize what Asia needs (what Malaysia needs) is in fact heroes rather than simple leaders (we already have heaps of those).

Development on PPS Phase 2 is underway. It will involve a COMPLETE revamp of the site, from the ground up. Bye-bye Movabletype, bye-bye to a lot of things that made PPS work up to now. The development team has got some great ideas to bring PPS forward with this revamp, but we would like to hear from you as well.

I've decided to take a tougher stance on ping violaters -- sites that are obviously commercial in nature will be BANNED without warning, blogs that repeatedly ping flood (even if its accidental -- you are responsible for your blog!), will be BANNED.

I need your help to keep PPS clean as i dont monitor it 24/7. Pls leave a comment here with the offending pinger, provide the URL and blog/website name. I will investigate every case and take necessary action.

Thanks to all in advance. PPS2 will come online later this year and that should solve most of these problems, but till then, this is the best solution available.

UPDATE 3: For Wordpress users who are upgrading your software, pls be sure to remove the PPS ping URL from your autopinger before you upgrade -- failure to do so will result in a ping flood, and will get your blog banned. Also, any commercial blog will get an immediate ban.

UPDATE 4: Spammers are getting smart and trying several tricks to bypass the system. I'll be getting more aggressive, and banning certain key phrases that are being used. This may inadvertently block out some legitimate pings by mistake. Please bear with this temporary solution, the next version of PPS will resolve these issues.

Hello Aiz, i really need your help this time. Can you make an announcement saying that i've pulled the plug and therefore im no longer a member of PPS? I've remove the ping to PPS from all my blogs and will never come back. I don't mind people talk crap about me but this guy http://tiredsoon.blogspot.com use my gf picture is too much. Imagine someone use your family member's picture in this situation. Please tell them to stop all those childish act. Im no longer a PPS member therefore i hope this would make them stop.
