Why do we blog?

A fellow blogger had this to say recently:

Oh well... looking at the bright side, I am not blogging for money but for ?? hmmm... interestingly I don't even know why I am blogging! [sigh]

via Mahagurusia.

How many of us could answer the question: why do we blog? For some, the answer is pretty straightforward -- they blog for money. Its a job. For others, its an exercise of their obvious literary talent. Technorati claims to track over 18 million blogs, the Blog Herald figures the numbers are very much more -- the stats, i suspect, are terribly inflated if you consider longevity as a factor. A blog that lasts 3 months before the blogger loses interest doesn't really amount to very much.

The truth of the matter is, blogging is still very much a youthful experience. Mr Kit Siang notwithstanding, a vast majority of Malaysian bloggers are very young. Teenagers probably make the bulk of us, followed closely by young adults who are just emerging into their twenties. It would be interesting reading to conduct a survey of their motivations and compare it against the motivations of more mature bloggers. Undoubtedly, the differences, on average, will probably be quite large.

I think different generations do it for different reasons. The younger teenage bloggers mostly blog as a way to comunicate, to be heard, much like "A blog therefore I am"

I blog to express thoughts which I can't do it verbally..ok no wait...I blog to express thoughts which would be better off read than be listened to.

Thanks Aizuddin for mentioning me (yippe!) and thanks again for setting up this wonderful site. Great job!

I am still sitting here wondering why do I blog, maybe I will never find my answers but I am just loving it at the moment. :-)

hello.
many people use their blog as online diaries.
Blogs are called online diaries 4 years ago.

I blog to convey my message so that my readers will be able to live well and make choices wisely.

You can see that I have put effort in getting traffic to my blog as I want as many people as possible to gain benefit from reading my blog.

My blog is religioun-free and it is for everybody to read (universal)

it is not easy to find very good blogs nowadays. Many blogs are very negative and destructive in nature... that shows how people make negative choices in life.

btw, what is the real purpose of PPS blog? How does it serve the blog community?

Thanks

Part of the reason as to why I blog is to work on my English writing skills. Blogging helps, a lot.

But I don't blog everyday; I blog only occasionally, that is, when an interesting thought comes to mind. I try to spend some time to come up with a good, thoughtful, or pretty much random post with my eccentric twist, instead of an extremely-common daily report thing.

As such, I treat my blog more like a journal of my thoughts, that I can look back at with a cringe and a smile on my face in 20 years time, instead of a "oh, I ate chicken sandwich today" thing.

I blog just to know what's actually a blog

i blog for money & for fun...

dah hobi ako..
