Farewell, folks
A while ago, I made the mistake of posting up a picture by young photographer Zhi Xin before I had secured permission. The article was only meant as a draft and the picture was only meant as a placeholder. But I blundered by clicking PUBLISH when I thought I had clicked DRAFT. The rest, as they say, is history.
The irony of all this is that writers are expected to uphold the highest standard of integrity. Mistakes, once made, are judged harshly and cannot be reversed.
In the words of a concerned bystander: "Nobody will want to read anything you write because you have been caught plagiarizing and your integrity has been compromised."
Quite right.
I have decided that I should step down and withdraw from the Project Petaling Street Blog. Someone else with greater integrity should be allowed to step up to the plate.
I can only offer a humble apology to anyone I may have insulted or harmed through my mistake, either directly or indirectly. Truly, I am sorry. I trust that my resignation will suffice.
To Aiz and the gang, thank for being such wonderful people to work with. You will always have my moral support.
To my readers, thank for following my articles. You can still find me lurking about in the basement, if you are so inclined.
Farewell, folks. It has been quite a ride.

is this really necessary?

Quite so.

I personally think it is ridiculous.
This doesn't teach me anything about integrity at all. I don't think I'm stupid, but this all doesn't make sense to me.
I can't see what the major fuss is about.

Most of the Pros are ultra sensitive about their photos. Why? It is the rice bowl you have infringed upon.
What is SO great about that photo anyway?. Anyone there could have taken a similar if not a better shot!

david: Unfortunately, it is what it is.
mwt: Yup, someone's ricebowl indeed.

This sucks. Like David Teoh, I find this ridiculous too.
Any chance of you reconsidering? I really like your writings here, man.
Oh well, as long as you still have your main blog...
Posted by: Sashi | September 6, 2005 09:09 AM
Yup, I agree with you about the ridiculous bit.
But no worries. You will still be able to catch me around on the Web.

Bye.

This is pointless. You're on the PPS blog for what you can contribute, and leaving for a mistake is just too much ado about a minor thing. I'm sure the photographer has accepted your apology and you have been sufficiently contrite.
So we can all now get on with life.

*waves excitedly*

As an added benefit, you can rest assured that no one else on PPS will be likely to make the same mistake I did.
Cheers!

If you're stepping down due to the pressure caused, I say you're a coward. And I don't mean it because you should have fight of those comments pointed at you.
I think as a PPS blogger, you have have more pride and respect for every blogger who ping PPS. That said, I feel that it's sad to hear that you're stepping down just because of a human mistake you have made. Unless Aizuddin has told you to step down, I believe that you should stay and blog under PPS.
If you just gave up because of this one mistake, you're letting yourself down as a PPS blogger and losing respect as a fine blogger. The mistake you had comitted wasn't a sin because as far as I understand you already stated in your post that you used the image without consent until you got in contact the artist.
Therefore, there shouldn't be any reason for you to resign. So I'd like to advise you not to resign and just learn from a so-called big mistake. I feel there are other ways to repent than resign and all these comments above proce it.
If you still choose to resign, good luck in your blogging future then. Cheers.

I was the first in line to ask John to reconsider his decision. I only accepted his resignation with a very heavy heart, and only because he insisted.

I'm not going to apologise for asserting my rights (mwt, I'm not a Pro, I admit that, but even amateurs would want the same acknowledgement the Pros get, wouldn't you agree?). I'm, however, sorry for John's resignation if folks out there think I'm responsible for it. Through our exchange of emails, I've been upbeat and polite about the whole thing and have urged John not to resign. As far as I'm concerned, this matter ceased to be an issue the moment John sent the email within minutes of my bitching on the comment box.

No one is asking zx to apologise.
I guess we need to revisit the original intentions of this blog. Forgiveness also means forgiving oneself.
Now that John has left, I don't think he, in his right mind, would want to retract his resignation. Then it will become another typical Malaysian sympathy ploy.
Now, who will feel the empty shoes?
Posted by: davidteoh | September 6, 2005 09:23 PM
what is wrong wt me today?
i meant who will 'fill' the empty shoes.
haha. I must get more sleep!

Allow me to copy and paste my comment from the Patriotism thread, so that no one misses anything:
Let me clarify things. My decision has nothing to do with Zhi Xin (a.k.a. Odds&Ends). It's something I made on my own accord based on several factors.
Firstly, I made a mistake and I am owning up to it. It would be hypocritical to continue blogging and pretend nothing ever happened.
Secondly, I have spent several years struggling in the publishing industry. I have had my fair share of harsh obstacles and unkind comments. Today, after literally going through hell, I finally have the opportunity to see writing as a hobby rather than as a challenge. Hobbies are meant to be fun. The moment it stops being fun, I have the option not to do it.
Thirdly, something very good will come out of this. From here on out, other bloggers will be more cautious about how they source their pictures. I am doing everyone a big favor.
Posted by: John Ling | September 7, 2005 04:36 AM
I have always tried to give you folks good articles.
Now, if you want to repay me, all I ask is that you respect my decision. There are a lot of things happening behind the scenes that I am not at liberty to share here. But trust me, my decision is the best one I can make, given the situation.
Incidentally, tomorrow will be my birthday. Let's not spoil it by prolonging the unpleasantness.
Thanks, everyone. =)

David: Fill in John's shoes? That's probably impossible. No, a few new PPS Bloggers have been shortlisted and a decision is pending.
A new PPS Blogger is special in his/her own right, i don't see that person as a replacement for John, nor an attept to fill his shoes. :) Any new PPS Blogger will have a unique pair of shoes.

Clicks orange shoes together.
"I wish I was back in Melbourne." :P
Anyway, happy be-early birthday wishes to you. John. Keep on enjoying life. *pass bottle of wine* ;)
Cheers.

Yup, I absolutely agree.
The next blogger will no doubt bring his own uniqueness and fun to PPS. He or she might even do much better than I have!
Cheers!

Three phrases should be among the most common in our daily usage. They are: Thank you, I am grateful and I appreciate.
