Breast milk for sale

Formula milk is an inferior substitute for breast milk. But for all sorts of reasons people will continue to buy formula milk for their babies.
So why are there no commercially available pasteurized human breast milk for sale to the general public?
An American firm Prolacta Bioscience, may yet begin a new trend in the commercialisation of breast milk. It plans to buy breast milk from milk banks and sell them to hospitals for sick children, an initiative which may eventually pave the way for the commercial availability of breast milk to the public.
What ethical reasons, if any, are there against the buying and selling of breast milk?
Comments
Goodness! That is probably the most difficult food product to get past any number of regulators!
Sticking to ethical considerations, some of the obvious points of contention would be :
Quality control - Some means must be had to ensure that "stock" from where the milk is sourced, is graded by some quality standards. The higher the quality of the "stock" the higher the price chargeable. Let's see the reaction of mothers on that!
Religious considerations - Try telling a mother that her milk is not Kosher or Halal. Or what happens when non-Halal milk is sold to or used by Muslims?
Milk-bourne diseases - Don't know if there is such a thing, but recently a baby was found to have cocaine in her system, most likely gotten through breast feeding. What kind of liabilities are under consideration here ?
General ethics on sale of body fluids - If it is ok to sell breast milk, why not put a price to semen and blood as well? How much would a dose of Arnie cost a mother who aspires for a future Mr Universe as a son?
Health examinations - All milking cows are frequently examined intrusively, including milk bearing glands, hormonal levels, etc. Imagine this : "Mrs Smith, the authorities are here to examine your breasts...." Good Lord !
Ok, so what other body secretions do you propose to sell? Maybe sweat from studs, for the perfume industry?
Posted by: Freddie Chong | August 8, 2005 06:49 PM
Quality control - huh? Since when has milk from one woman been superior to that from another? LOL.
Religious - nutrients ingested by the mother is not reflected in her milk, just as dietary cholesterol ingested is not reflected in one's blood cholesterol count. So milk is neither halal nor non-halal.
Milk-borne diseases - like the donation of blood, there will be safeguards for this of course!
Sale of body fluids - what's wrong with selling semen? Of course, if you look like Tom Cruise and has an Einstein brain, you never have to work a day again. Just retire to the stud farm :Þ Blood is no-no because it impacts on the health of the supplier.
Health exam - easy. Set up a milking factory assembly line. First you sterilize your hands with antiseptic, then you are herded into a germ free cubicle supplied with the dizzy array of breast pumps and expressed milk paraphernalia. Then you set to work. Some people have a 9 - 5 day job doing boring office work, others are professional mamaryepreneurs.
So tell me, what's so terrible about that? :Þ

Remember, the more milk you express, the faster you lose weight. I suggest all overweight lactating mothers donate their milk after their babies are weaned. They not only save money from slimming centers, they earn extra pocket money.
Posted by: Tinkerbell | August 8, 2005 08:22 PM
Ok, let's explore this.
I am willing to bet that milk from somebody of Dolly Parton's stature, would surely command a much higher price. Perceived quality, you know what I mean? Now, that would cause a lot of problems with women's rights organizations.
Then of course, there will be fake immitations from the oversized ah-Lians in China.... who incidentally may be bred specifically for such purposes as being part of a lactation factory. What about their rights, huh?
From a religious viewpoint, I seriously don't think any milk coming out from a woman who is known to consume porcine food products would be considered Kosher or Halal. Any problems in this area would certainly provoke the wrath of the United States, since we all know that the US is run by Jews. Very tricky, say what? Hmmmm.... an after thought...What do you say to to mothers who prefer vegetarian diets for their babies ?
Milk-borne diseases will definitely be a problem. But wait! Here is an opportunity for the pahrmaceutical companies to come up with milk test kits, you know... like blood test kits.
On the sale of body fluids, you may have something there. Here would be a great way to keep over entusiastic school boys from getting shcool girls into trouble. Milk them 3 times a day, and they get pocket money on the side.
Health exam - Where can I apply for a job?
Posted by: Freddie Chong | August 8, 2005 08:38 PM
Then that's even better! Be enterprising! Start many lines of products. We have our premium lines of Kosher milk officially certified and stamped as having originated from real Jewish women.
For Malaysia, we have the halal line, the products stamped, sealed and witnessed as genuine products from Malay women. What about milk from the Orang Asli women? Is that super halal or what?
Of course, these lines would be the top of the range products commanding higher prices.
And of course, there are the Vegetarian milk lines for the vegan babies, the Fiery Hot Curry milk line for Indian babies that must be trained to accept hot food etc etc.
Selling of Sperm - since when has schoolboys preferred a sterile room with dog-eared ancient playboy mags to a SYT? Unlike breast milk, sperm may not earn you much. As you know, sperm is dirt cheap. Too easy, you know, 5 seconds and you've enough to impregnate millions :)
So there you go. What's wrong with all the great enterprising minds of the world? Why is breast milk still not found on pharmacy shelves yet?

I wonder if a woman can lactate well beyond post-menstrual years? Hehehe!
Posted by: Tinkerbell | August 8, 2005 09:13 PM
Wait!
Who is going to taste it to see it it's any good? Errr...How does the tasting process go? Any particular.... receptacle to be used?

"I wonder if a woman can lactate well beyond post-menstrual years? Hehehe!"
Now what? Is there a market for something that makes women lactate beyond post-menstrual years? What are you thinking?

make sure you check the expiry date when you buy
Posted by: 8dee | August 16, 2005 10:25 AM
Think of the endless possibilities of commerical breast milk. With a bit of imagination, a simple contraption would even enable a father to breastfeed his baby with real breast milk.
Posted by: Tinkerbell | August 16, 2005 01:45 PM
This expiry date thing is a problem. There is the issue of the milk expiring, and the "cow" expiring. We don't want to buy breast milk from ancient "cows", right?
And really, all breast milk companies will have to clearly label their products so as to protect consumer rights, ie. "Mother's Milk", "Father's Milk", "Pondan's Milk" and so on.
If there are any composite products, these should be clearly stated too, eg. "All natural composite infant animal feed, made from the best Mothers, Cows, and Soya extract"
Posted by: Freddie Chong | August 17, 2005 12:03 AM
Expiry date of the source of breast milk might plunge the enterprise in legal quagmire with anti discrimination laws.
Instead there should be clear labelling on the quality of milk expressed. When a woman expresses milk, the first cup is the creamiest and the best. Thereafter, her milk gets more watery. A bit like squeezing santan, the first batch is the best.
So there should be clear labels eg. First Squeeze, Second Squeeze etc. So First Squeeze are for the discerning customers who do not mind paying a bit more, just like some fussy consumers would only buy free range chicken.

Some states it is illegal to sale breast milk so how do you find out which states that it is legal in?

I'm a nursing mother who is considering opening a small company to supply breast milk commercially. Since I've had my daughter, I've come to realize why so many people fail in their attempts to breastfeed, even though they know it's best for their baby. There are a lot of obstacles and trials to overcome, and some people just don't make it through. Also, some people adopt and are thus unable to nurse their new baby. The next best thing would be someone else's breast milk, but many people are afraid to buy from mothers they don't know because of the risk of disease or contamination, and there is not one single company in the world that sells breast milk. So parents end up buying expensive formula that isn't very good for their babies anyway. There are 10 milk banks in the U.S., but you need a prescription to get breast milk from them, they charge an exorbitant rate of around $3.25 an ounce, and most insurance companies don't cover the cost. I'm hoping to become the first commercial provider of safe, pasteurized breast milk at reasonable prices. There are easily a hundred mothers that I've seen online who have too much milk and want to sell it, but so many people are afraid to buy from unknown moms that the milk just goes to waste. Right now I'm just looking to gauge what type of response I'd get, and the response will really determine whether I'd even start my proposed company in the first place. If you're a mother with excess milk, and you'd be willing to help provide other mothers with pure, safe breast milk for their babies and get paid for it (I'll admit, I wouldn't be able to pay a lot per ounce, but I promise you would have a steady buyer to provide a reliable source of secondary income), please email me at mothersmilksupplier@yahoo.com. I'm more than happy to answer any questions you may have, or listen to anything you have to say about my idea. Actually, input would be nice, because I'm honestly trying to figure out how I'm going to go about making this happen. Thanks in advance to everyone for taking time to read this. (P.S. I live in Texas, which has no laws that I am aware of which govern the sale of breast milk; however, such laws vary from state to state).

Everyone already knows that breast milk is best. My wife has been overproducing for our new boy; now I have 3 full freezers full of it that we won't use (with more coming.)
I'd like to sell this to anyone who would rather use real human breast milk than synthetic formula. They're frozen in 4 oz bottles, labeled with date of extraction. The earliest samples are from November 27 2005.
The mother has never used any tobacco products or alcohol. She does not drink coffee or soda, and hasn't been sick at any time during the extraction of the milk that is for sale.
Please email me @ flirtbecoming@yahoo.com for more info

I dont know about Khoser or halal. But as far as vergitarian/vegan all human milk is fine. It is given willingly, and doesnt hurt the person it came from.
And what is this about Dolly Parton? Do you mean it would be worth more because she is a celebrity? or because she has large breasts? Either way it makes no sence that as a nutritinal substance it should be worth more or less.... The size of a womens breasts has absoulty NOTHING to do with the amount of quality of her milk. As far as celebrity status that would only affect the cost of her milk in the same way it would affect the cost of her toenail clippings.
and fathers can bf, its called an SNS. Its made for women who dont have enough milk (perhaps from surgery), but a father could use the same device.
And first squeeze? second squeeze? wtf? At each feed (or pumping), the first milk that comes out (the foremilk)is higher in fat content, thus being creamier. After a little bit it changes to the hindmilk which is higher in calories. Babies need BOTH.

well I would sell my breast milk if I could, I dont know if it is leagal here in Canada. I have not pumped or breast fed my girl since she was 10 months old - july 2004
and now it is february 2006 and I sill have breast milk thats 20 months ago (drying up can take UP TO 6 months)! the doctor told me in rare cases that women dont dry up. the glans even though they are NOT being stimulated to make brestmilk still do ( im a freak I know). when you first breastfeed you have an abundant suply but the nursings usualy regulate it by about 3-5 months and you dont have to wear breast pads (they stop the milk from leaking threw to your shirt for those who dont know what breast pads are). but with me lets just say the milk never leveled out and even after the time I stoped I was still wearing those uncomfy pads for about 3 months after. I have about an ounce in each side now. I could take perscription pills to dry me up but they have side effects and besides that, they dont bother me. if I was to start pumping my milk would increase but I dont dare. I was a c cup befor Double D cup during, and to think I was so excited to be able to see my feet and not my big belly once she was born and then not be able to see them due to my large bust.:) imagin a 150 pound woman 5'9" and my size bust, I didnt look normal! but if I could I would sell it. Even donate it if Canada had a milk bank.

Dear Mothers To Be
I am a 30yr old mother with a 4 month son. I am a firm beleiver that breast milk is the best source of food for our children. I am looking to sell milk once I finish breast feeding my son. I am a non smoker and don't drink. I am taking DuetDHA prenatal vitamins. DuetDHA is highly concentrated to provide the 200 mg of DHA. DHA is an Omega-3 fatty acid that has been linked to improved vision & mental development in babies. I also exercise. Since I am still nursing my son I am looking for a mother to be that would be giving birth to a child towards the end of this year. If your interested please email with ANY questions or concerns. I prefer mothers in the Cincinnati / Indiana area I feel its mportant for a mother to know the person providing breast milk if they so wish.
