Please help test PPS
PPS is available for some ping testing. Earlier today, Suanie noticed a problem (all pings were returning "403 Throttled" errors) and i believe i've fixed it. Please try it out, feedback is welcomed. Only for existing PPS members.
Comments
2 problems:
1. PPS IP address is sent to the syste whenever the PPS pinger is used. The system is designed to block multiple submissions from the same IP address.
2. There was a minimum of 20 seconds between pings from the same IP address. If pings arrive from the same IP address within less than 20 seconds of each other, then the ping is "throttled" and the IP address is automatically banned.
To solve both problems above, i:
a. Configured the system to allow for multiple pings from the PPS IP address.
b. Set the ping throttle timing to 1 second. Therefore, its theoretically possible to still hit the 403 throttle error if two people submit their pings at the exact same instant.
Let's see how it goes.

Posted by: jen | October 13, 2005 03:01 PM
I still get this
Response: HTTP/1.1 403 Throttled Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2005 07:03:06 GMT Server: Apache Pragma: no-cache Connection: close Content-Type: text/xml; charset=utf-8 1 You are pinging trackbacks too quickly. Please try again later.
Trackbacks done.

Ok, i'm checking. Will try to disable the throttle feature altogether, if possible.
Posted by: Aizuddin Danian | October 13, 2005 03:20 PM
I still see - HTTP error: 403 Throttled.
Posted by: Ken | October 13, 2005 03:25 PM
403 throttled.
Posted by: ShaolinPinger | October 13, 2005 03:57 PM
Oh btw, it's because we're all using Streamyx and their stupid transparent web cache, so we are all appearing from the same actual IP address (the IP of the web cache), not our own IP addresses.
Posted by: ShaolinPinger | October 13, 2005 04:03 PM
Still having some trouble with it. Will continue investigating.
Posted by: Aizuddin Danian | October 13, 2005 04:04 PM
still the same with the error. =)
Posted by: jean` | October 13, 2005 04:19 PM
Yup, I still get that error.
Posted by: Liz | October 13, 2005 05:23 PM
HTTP error: 403 Throttled
5.33pm
I successfully pinged once at 4.52pm tho.
Posted by: VaLz | October 13, 2005 05:35 PM
I've modified further the anti-spam engine. Please try again.
Posted by: Aizuddin Danian | October 13, 2005 05:35 PM
Its still a problem. Hhhmm... i've submitted a support ticket to Six Apart for help. Let's see what help they can provide.
Posted by: Aizuddin Danian | October 13, 2005 06:00 PM
seems the manual pinger is working fine, but the auto-pinger seems down. did a ping about 5 mins ago.
Posted by: Serge | October 13, 2005 06:01 PM
worked just fine for me
Posted by: Lainie | October 13, 2005 07:10 PM
as of 7:30pm, the pinger still doesn't work. same error message.
Posted by: cccp | October 13, 2005 07:29 PM
Seems like there is a bit of instability in the system. It works ok, until it hits what it considers spam (too many pings submitted at the same time), then after a while it opens back up again.
This would work great for a regular blog (didn't i tell you that MT was fantastic!), but not so great for PPS.
I'm trying to modify the script to remove this function. Please standby.
Thanks to everyone for lending a helping hand.

Posted by: Alex Yong | October 13, 2005 08:51 PM
I see I see..
I get HTTP error: 403 Throttled as well. :D So have to try when there is no ping? :P
Posted by: wong | October 13, 2005 09:24 PM
I have the same problem on Oct 13 2005 9:43pm for my first post :(
Posted by: jlchannel | October 13, 2005 09:46 PM
Aiz, still the same error. Hope this testing is of some help. Thanks and best of luck.
Posted by: iblogme | October 13, 2005 10:19 PM
nope. throttled, as well.
Posted by: bUttsHAk3r | October 13, 2005 10:21 PM
Gah! Infernal ping engine! Throttle you to death ala Donald Duck!
Posted by: Giant Sotong | October 13, 2005 10:48 PM
I just pinged manually and it worked, I didn't get the 403 error.
Posted by: BawangMerah | October 13, 2005 10:48 PM
Aiz, I've sent you an email a long time ago concerning an auto pinger I've written for blogspot users, automatically pinging PPS. I'm not sure if you have gotten it, or just chose to ignore the whole thing =\
Anyway, I've noticed something: the same trackback can now be sent a few times, the trackback srcipt on your end isn't recording trackbacks that are sent anymore, and returning outputting an error like it previously did. See the ping test page, I've sent a few pings in quick succession, and all were passed.

Works pretty well for me. The manual ping.
Posted by: Eliar Swiftfire | October 13, 2005 11:19 PM
I take that back, it's not working.
Posted by: Eliar Swiftfire | October 13, 2005 11:22 PM
And I've successfully got my pinger's IP banned :)
Posted by: Ignorant Cow | October 13, 2005 11:23 PM
nope, me got Error 403 oso.
Posted by: The Visitor | October 13, 2005 11:31 PM
I've deleted the part of the script that controls ping throttling.
I've sent more than a dozen pings in 2 minutes to the system, and none got rejected.
Please try again to see whether the 403 error still pops up.
Posted by: Aizuddin Danian | October 13, 2005 11:39 PM
worked :)
Posted by: emily | October 14, 2005 12:16 AM
okay aiz, works fine for me now.
Posted by: bUttsHAk3r | October 14, 2005 12:26 AM
I've tried the manual pinger but still nothing. No error whatsoever too. What happened?
Posted by: Willwolf | October 14, 2005 01:19 AM
It's alive!
Works.
Posted by: TheMalayMale | October 14, 2005 01:41 AM
I tried the autopinger and it's not working. T_T Either that or it's super slow.
Posted by: Mei | October 14, 2005 08:44 AM
Log in to the member's page (the manual pinger page), instructions to get the new autopinger URL is there.
Posted by: Aizuddin Danian | October 14, 2005 09:08 AM
Aizuddin, the ping seems to be working fine. Good work and well done.
Posted by: mahagurusia | October 14, 2005 09:41 AM
Aiz,
its friday,oct14 and my ping was successfully sent.
good job! well done!
Posted by: arin amil | October 14, 2005 12:55 PM
Considering some of my ping contents, this is gonna be a bit ironic, but
"Powers
MILFs + Boob Squad
MILF, Big T*ts and Round asses plus 12 other sites($3.00)"
Google ad on PPS. bit dodgy, no?
Posted by: Lainie | October 14, 2005 04:59 PM
is there a rss feed for the pings? used to be before the upgrade. thanks!
Posted by: s3ri | October 15, 2005 01:05 AM
hilo,
just want to check " so please make sure your membership details are up to date as an email notification will be sent to you whenever the ping URL changes." for this is there anyway to check or update the email for our account ??
second to request the auto ping, we need to put the blog url as subject, what if we have more then one blog to ping pps ? do we put all the url in subject ? or one email for each url?
Posted by: Knight | October 15, 2005 05:55 AM
Sri: No RSS yet for the pings.
Knight: The same ping URL will work for all your blogs.

Aiz, the fonts seem to be a little small, and the manual pinger form is messed up.
I think DannyFoo can help out doing the styling
Posted by: Chewxy | October 15, 2005 05:44 PM
I do agree that the font is a bit too small to my liking or should I say, to my eyes liking.
The site looks nice but the fonts and overall "post area" seemed to be too small.
Posted by: nebo | October 16, 2005 01:16 AM
Maybe the link to manual pinger needs a more prominent attention. I had trouble finding it.
Posted by: __earth | October 17, 2005 04:58 PM
Font adjustments can be made easily but the thing with Stylecatcher is that the CSS stylesheet isn't displayed in the templates. They are linked back from MT.
However, you can override the CSS by placing your own CSS properties in your template. I'm still trying to get my auto-pinger to work.
p/s: Please place the Manual Pinger link on the homepage above About PPS. :)
Cheers.
Posted by: Danny Foo | October 18, 2005 10:37 AM
My auto-pinger still doesn't seem to be working though I've already requested for a new ping URL. Sigh, looks like the manual thing will have to do for now.
Posted by: Danny Foo | October 19, 2005 02:15 PM
What's the status of this PPS now? Still testing stage?
