David v Goliath

The Malaysian blogosphere was rocked over the weekend of Oct 2 as Berita Harian decided to run a series of front-page barrages against Jeff Ooi and Screenshots. PPS recommends lending your voice to this issue. We should all recognize this is as a truly significant event for Malaysian media. Anyone who has ever said that blogs will not and cannot make a difference should now reconsider their position.

A most interesting development that brings us bloggers out into the limelight.

The authorities are being childish. I think we finally have substantial proof why Malaysia 'boleh'. Instead of picking on Jeff Ooi, a blogger who clearly has done more than that Kamalliahwhatshisname character in the malaysian blogging scene, perhaps the authorities would consider writing about how vcd pirates operate in front of police stations in broad daylight.

Plus, this whole controversy goes against the freedom of speech factor. This is a sad, sad day for all who thought Malaysia is a liberal country.

Somebody pleeeeeasseee lower the malaysian flag at half mast!!

:)

As I see it,

1) it was one comment which was a tad insulting to UMNO
2) the commenter used a pseudonym, in this case of an opposition leader who is anti-UMNO
3) It could have been a mole planted by the parties offended to either discredit Anwar or discredit Jeff Ooi.
4) Jeff did not delete it, but stated that he did not approve of the comment.
5) I do not know why the insulting comment was left on, but perhaps it was to remind people there are idiots living among us.

Under what grounds should Jeff Ooi apologise? How did this get blown out of proportion? I think we Malaysians are mature enough to discern between what is nonsense and what is not.

When one feeds these lowlifes with such attention, it only goes to show how small minded one is.

A million people read Berita Harian. Not that many ppl read this. You've all lost.

Posted by: roger at October 4, 2004 11:32 AM

Now now, roger. I'm sure one would be able to come up with a better comment than this. And NOT that many people read blogs? Wow. Statistics, please, anyone?

I'll skip the ad hominems, because over here we're kinda civilised.

One last thing. Since when was any of this about winning? You poor, poor, troll :)

Posted by: Ash.ox at October 4, 2004 02:54 PM

Great exposure for blogs...bad PR for Berita Harian...and if the public doesn't do any thinking (I'm kinda skeptical and pessimistic now), poor Jeff.

It is clear where our M'sian media is heading and it certainly isn't the sky.

Posted by: Mei at October 4, 2004 04:13 PM

Hi roger, I doubt you read berita harian, because if you did you would know that not so long ago, a month or two, the NST group was making a hur and cry over readership numbers. I don't think 'million' is the right range. Try thousands...

Its not about winning. Its about the unethical way how a national institution was twisted to serve certain individual's agendas.

Posted by: Benel at October 4, 2004 04:51 PM

IMHO roger, I'm sure you can come up with a much more insightful comment/feedback than that ;)

On the issue, I guess my vote goes to jeff for he seem's to have done his homework while the other party has not.

People are beginning to find out how huge the spread of blogs are but I don't think there's anything bad about it. It's always good to have many sides to a story ;)

Cheers!!! :D

Posted by: hyelbaine at October 4, 2004 05:12 PM

I root for Jeff.

Here's a suggestion, shd the issue is handled badly by the powers that be, both bloggers and readers must take a unified action - collecting signatures, sending memo or even organising peaceful gathering to make our voice heard.

I think we have enough number of netizens to do this.

Posted by: Jifah at October 4, 2004 07:20 PM

honestly, roger. ugh. you obviously are new in the blogging scene. open the blind eye.

pretty please. (with a cherry)

Posted by: Rajiv Perumal at October 4, 2004 09:45 PM

ya, agree with jifah. this is the time that all bloggers should come together to show their solidarity. if anything really does happen to jeff (touch wood!), bloggers should unite and come together as jifah suggested.

don't forget your 'support screenshot/jeff' button! put it up in your blog!

Posted by: lucia at October 4, 2004 11:20 PM

I just keep my finger cross and wait somebody submit the news to www.slashdot.org and "evil imperialism western" media.

What is more interesting than Bush vs Kerry?

Blogger vs "the Media"

Posted by: moo at October 4, 2004 11:28 PM

Roger - A million people may read Berita Harian - but a very large percentage of those people are Malaysian. Consider Jeff's recent post which included a graph displaying his site stats (in fact you could have a look at them directly by clicking any of the tracking image stats he has on his side navbar) - Combine the numbers there with the statistics of other webloggers on PPS. I know that my own post on Jeff's predicament garnered >600 unique hits within 8 hours. And more than 1000 since I've posted it.

Weblog readership comprises of people from more diverse backgrounds : M'sians from other countries, non-M'sians - we're not just relying on some 22million ppl in Malaysia to read our views (in fact a large majority of m'SIAN popn still do not have easy access to a stable net connection).

Why do you think the NSTP group is viciously attacking Jeff? The fear is palpable, they have maintained an online news site for so many years now but it doesn't encourage the level of interaction that Jeff's blog has had with his audience.

They're beginning to realise that weblogs are a force to reckon with - we've raised the standards. Not just here in Malaysia but in US, and other countries - traditional media channels have been challenged.

I support Screenshots!

Posted by: hafizismail at October 5, 2004 07:17 AM

It is indeed a very sad moment for Malaysian liberty. A silly, coward comment from a 'kampung' kid sparked this war of David vs Goliath. (tongshanchai = a kid/son from hometown/kampung/rural) But instead of seeking the apologies of the kid, the media has lambasted an innocent blogger. What idiocy!

http://kay-el.blogspot.com/2004/10/blog-storm-brewing.html

Oh lucia, where do I get the 'support screenshot/jeff' button???

Posted by: kay-el at October 5, 2004 02:35 PM

This is not Goliath vs. David.
It's a gang of Big Boys vs. one lone voice of reason.
We may not have the print media, but let's make our numbers out in blogosphere count.
United we stand, divided we fall.

Posted by: jalanriong at October 5, 2004 05:26 PM

we won't fall. it's the internet, dudes!

but somebody has to break this out in meatspace; place "support jeff ooi" posters, let loose flyers at busy junctions, stick stickers over the "bumiputra commerce cheats workers" stickers. put berita harian on its knees.

Posted by: lionel at October 5, 2004 08:52 PM

i wonder if pooling money together and publishing a "support jeff ooi" notice in the NSTP is such a bad idea.. talk abt irony.. :)

badawi has been awfully silent abt the whole issue.. any lit. on wht badawi's take is?

Posted by: finnique at October 5, 2004 10:12 PM

i may be being hopelesly optimistic, but maybe Badawi thinks it's all a pile of dog-mess too, and he's seeing who he can do without. like i said, hopelessly optimistic :)

don't those people out there know how to read? Jeff mentioned in his blog that if you can't handle freedom of speech, don't enter his blog. what's the big fuss? probably the govt should spend more money to educate them. you have my support Jeff.

I think they have to put a sign here saying "don't post comment if you can't handle the not-suppose-to-click-so-many-times POST button" :)

moo : I just keep my finger cross and wait somebody submit the news to www.slashdot.org and "evil imperialism western" media

I think God heard your prayers, Jeff appeared in SlashDot.

“Someone scares Authorities! Authorities Panic! Authority Stabs Itself In The Eye, Covering Itself In Crap In Full View of International Media! Persecuted People Get Ever-So-Righteous About Something That Under Normal Circumstances No One Would Give A Rat's Buttock About! Film At Eleven!”

It's terribly enervating. I can see it in the future: Jeff Ooi, ‘the Grizzled Veteran of The Guerilla War Against Malaysian Oppression’, Giving Out Interviews To Television Networks And Talking About ‘Convergence’ and ‘The State of “New Media”’.

I tell you, someone needs to make fun of you guys before it's too late and you folks become Vernor Vinge fans.

I can't do this T_T

boooo berita harian boooo

Posted by: Lainie at October 6, 2004 09:39 PM

well hey, it rhymes. i'd like to see Anwar try that.

Posted by: prema at October 6, 2004 10:50 PM

Well, damn. So it does.

Didn't notice that. Wow, I'm like the Unconscious Wordsmith or something.

Which makes for an excellent title for a blog. Someone steal it, quick!

Posted by: T-Boy at October 7, 2004 08:37 AM

I think the public has reacted well towards the hoohaa but the main actor: Jeff Ooi is appreantly involved with something. See the allegations posted by one Dr Blurry at http://bolehtalk.blospot.com/ .I think this kind of development is not very healthy.

Posted by: Xfrenzy at October 7, 2004 09:40 AM

The media and technology have gone hand in hand to bring freedom of speech, stupidity and ignorance to different levels.

Malaysian just love drama, dont they? this is one episode they'll never forget " How the Internet slipped in and scared the hell outta them".

Sorry folks, game over.

What else is new? Freedom of speech - sorry, no such thing! At the end of the day, mentality rules. Sigh!

Posted by: Bkworm at October 22, 2004 04:10 PM

Not being responsible for what you say. Bloggers are so prone to it these days. That, and despite the fact they simply don't adhere to simple, 'blog rules' i.e. including your correct particulars, especially when you're posting your comments because it helps us get back to you, and the like. Anonymity is out of the question when it comes to commenting on a blog entry. It's being polite that counts, not keeping people guessing and questioning your identity. And it's very rude, not doing so.

Ultimately, it really implies that you're afraid and do not want to be responsible for what you say. Gee, this and the lack of press freedom in Malaysia.

Identify with these, anonymity equals harassment and spamming. No shortcuts about that.

Posted by: deborah at October 22, 2004 11:13 PM

Gee, deborah, you're right and all.

So what should we do? There are things that being anonymous affords you. Not all of them have anything to do with spamming or harrassment.

Would you prefer the restricted ability to speak over full accountability for your actions? Or are you willing to accept the fact that you will get harrased, that you will get spammed on the Internet, and that this is preferable to a state where accountability is all, and no one speaks for the fear of offense?

I know what I want. And I prefer having to sift to crap than having someone else holding me responsible for everything I say.
